Fontographer Box Shot

 Macromedia
 Fontographer ™

by Ivan Anthony Walsh

Macromedia's Fontographer, the industry-standard for font design on the Macintosh and Windows, offers all the features necessary for font design and more. The attractive toolbar allows access to the exceptional features with a few clicks. Fontographer 4.1 will satisfy both the novice and experienced designer with its robust tools and excellent help files.

Aimed at type designers and graphic studios, Fontographer allows modifications to existing fonts with excellent it's drawing tools. Fonts can be easily modified and saved as postscript or true-type. Fontographer allows editing to PostScript Type 1 and TrueType fonts. The Blending tool allows new fonts to be designed by blending two existing fonts together.

The floating toolbar has numerous impressive tools within it. Shaping a font is no more difficult than double clicking the character to be edited (for example A, lowercase) and designing the letter with the drawing tools. Symbols, foreign characters and logos can all be easily designed or modified.

Features:

Rendered Fonts can be viewed as character, keystroke or Unicode. Edited fonts can be carefully examined in the editing windows. The Metrics window allows the fonts to be previewed before printing.

The import function supports EPS files from Freehand an Illustrator. Bitmaps and kerning pairs can also be imported without any difficulty. The export function supports EPS and PICT files as well as the generated fonts for the Macintosh, Windows, NeXT and Solaris platforms.

Hinting is either automatic, or manual. In automatic mode Fontographer will recalculate hints automatically when you edit character outlines. The manual mode shows that you have actually edited the hints. Manual mode does not replace manually edited hints with its own.

The Help file has an Expert Advice section. This has very useful tips on Font Blending, Font Hinting and understanding the Preferences. The Preferences dialog is set up like your PC; you can customize the layout of work environment. As many commands and tools work in different ways you can choose your preferences, which are then saved when you exit. For those beginning with Fontographer 4.1, go to the Expert Advice section first and take in these three sections.

Fontographer remains the best in its field and has continued to improve with each release. For those captivated by font design, either professionally or for personal pleasure, Fontographer 4.1 offers the most extensive collection or features on the market today. Combined with a graceful interface Fontographer has established itself as the industry leader.
